My participation to the races stays an act of will, and it is exactly in it that the thing distinguishes itself from the passion. I feel no need to race, but I feel even less some desire to not doing it.
Jacky Ickx pays homage to the Restaurant of Hunaudières
On 26th October 2006 a friendly meeting was held in the office of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest in the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit. This event was Jacky Ickx'idea who, for many, keeps being "Monsieur Le Mans" - Bruno Vandestick, the ACO speaker, mentioned that Tom Kristensen still considered the Belgian pilot as such - as well as the ACO and its President, Jean-Claude Plassart, who also attended this meeting.
Le Mans, June 14th 1969. The start of the 37th endurance race of the 24 hours of Le Mans will exceptionally be given at 14:00 because of presidential elections. The drivers are in front of their cars, they hate this start procedure, dating from another time. Indeed the reason why this Le Mans type start was decided in 1925 doesn’t convince today.
The other day, while Jacky Ickx and I had lunch in a very nice little Italian restaurant, Jacky says to me: "I have just received a splendid book whose foreword, very touching, is written by Jean-Claude Andruet. You must absolutely tell this history on our website! ".
When I met you for the first time, I remained spot, without knowing what to do. This so famous smile, I had it in front of me. I had dreamed about this meeting and you, whom we are calling «Mister Le Mans», were in front of me.
On October 26th, 2005, I received an e-mail of my friend Marc Devillers saying that Jacky Ickx chairs the RACB Renault Academy. Not knowing this fact, I asked him to send a copy of the press article and some minutes later, I was reading that Jacky will be in Zolder the next day. After confirmation read on the RACB's website, it was decided, tomorrow I will go to Zolder.
We are August 27th, 2005, it is 6 o'clock in the morning. I begin early for a big workday because I am late for my delays of documents delivery. At about the 9 am, I switch on the computer and, as usual, first reflex, I glance on Jacky Ickx's site because Julien has always something to tell.
Try to imagine yourselves on the mythical circuit of Zandvoort, in a paddock at the effigy of the Ferrari horse, in the company of a mythical driver, that is, Jacky Ickx, with whom you are going to spend more than nine hours talking together...
Three years ago, this website appeared on the web as such. Three long years punctuated with happy meetings and with any kind of events with, as final reward, the recognition by Jacky Ickx himself.
Advantageous sixty years old, and elegance always well collared, Jacky Ickx, besides director of race of the 4th Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, crosses the life in a philosophy very Zen today.
