In 1970, if the Greman Grand Prix had taken place on the circuit of Nurburgring and not at Hockenheim, it is very likely that I would have been world champion in a regular way. However, I consider excellent that the 1970 title went to Jochen Rindt.

The found treasure


The 16th of August 1970, on the circuit of Zeltweg, Jacky Ickx wins the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix in front of his team-mate Clay Regazzoni at the average speed of 208,04 km/h.

At the start, Jochen Rindt is on pole position in front of Clay Regazzoni. Jacky is third on the starting grid. Regazzoni takes immediately the lead in front of Ickx and Rindt.
François Cevert exploded his engine during this first lap whereas he was eighth but a lack of indication of the oil spot makes it invisible to the leaders during the second lap. Regazzoni skids on the oil but manages to stay on the track, Ickx passes by miracle and takes the opportunity to pass his team-mate, Rindt raises the foot in order to not hit the Swiss but loses contact with the leaders. He is now in sixth position.

During the tenth lap, Ickx, Regazzoni and Beltoise are wheel in wheel, Jochen Rindt comes back and is only 10 seconds behind Beltoise. The gap is reduced to 7 seconds in the eighteenth lap but the engine of Lotus 72 breaks. Beltoise then will know some fuel problems and it is Stommelen that takes the third place. Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni then will widen the gap on the other cars which will be, on finished line, of 1'27"88 on Rolf Stommelen and will relegate all the other cars to a lap or more.

Nearly 100.000 spectators run towards the podium. It is delirious.
Jacky has just win his fourth Grand Prix, but for the crowd, it is mostly the first Ferrari victory in a Grand Prix since the French GP 1968 in Rouen, also won by Jacky Ickx : his first Formula One victory.
Jacky is carried by this great flood of people. Let us not forget that Italy is very close to Austria and that a great number of Italian spectators came to attend the Grand Prix.

In the euphoria and the crowd, what happened to the Trophy which was given to Jacky on the podium ?
Nobody knows it. Jacky Ickx, himself, does not have any memory of it and I do not feel the right to carry out a enquiry about the disappearance, volunteer or not, of this trophy nor on the circumstances which brought this trophy on the stall of an Art salesman at Watkins Glen in 1999.

Indeed, this trophy has reappeared without it being awaited.

A friend that Jacky and myself have in common, is this day there at Watkins Glen to attend a racing event. While passing in front of the stall of an arts dealer, he notices a trophy and by examining it, he realizes that it is the one which was given to Jacky after his GP victory in Austria in 1970. Our friend then asked the salesman on the origin of the object which answers to have bought it from a person who, himself, had obtained it at the time of a charity sale in Monaco. Our friend, who is an unconditional admirer of Jacky Ickx, thus decides to buy this invaluable treasure.
Let us recall that at that time, no one did not know that this trophy was not among the hundreds of others that Jacky received throughout his formidable career of racing driver.

Sometimes later our friend has the chance to meet Jacky Ickx during a another race event. Together, they evoke memories about races and when our friend tells Jacky that he bought the famous trophy, a little earlier, at Watkins Glen, Jacky congratulates him but does not speak about the circumstances of the disappearance of the object because, what our friend is unaware of at this time, Jacky Ickx, himself, does not know them. In the exaltation of this meeting with Jacky, our friend sees nothing wrong there. But back at home, he starts to think that maybe Jacky would like to recover his trophy. He thus writes to him and proposes to return this Cup, trophy deserved twenty-nine years before at Zeltweg. But Jacky, as a great lord, refuses, estimating that this trophy is now between very good hands, those of unconditional admirer of our Great Champion.

If it were still necessary to show it, we have, here, the proof that Mr Ickx is a true gentleman.

This friend has authorized me to write this article and to publish the pictures of his treasure such as it is exposed at his place, with a replication of the Bell helmet of Jacky Ickx, the official program of this GP of Austria 1970 and soon a replication at scale 1:12 of the Ferrari 312 B drove by Jacky Ickx during that event will be showed too.

Bonjour.
Histoire incroyable mais vrai. L'ami qui vous est commun à vous et à Jacky, est également un de mes amis. Nous étions tout les deux à Watkins Glen lorsqu'il a acheté le trophé. J'était passé voir ce trophé une demi heure avant lui, mais n'ayant pas l'oeil aussi bien aiguisé que lui, je n'ai pas cru que le trophé était vrai étant donné son prix relativement bas.

Inutile de vous dire que je me suis mordu les doigts lorsqu'il m'a appris l'avoir acheté parce qu'il s'agissait bien du vrai trophé. Mais je ne garde pas de goût amer de cette aventure.......le trophé est entre bonnes mains.

Mon ami m'a invité à visiter votre site pour lire l'article, mais je crois qu'il voulait également me faire voir les photos qui accompagne l'article. Sur ces photos l'ont peux y voir le casque de Jacky que j'ai fait pour mon ami. L'ensemble est vraiment génial.

Je suis un modeste grand fan de Jacky. Je le connais depuis que j'ai lu l'album de Michel Vaillant " De l'huile sur la piste" que j'ai lu il y a au moins 25 ans de ça. Comme tout les vrais grands de sa profession, c'est autant sa personnalité que ses exploits qui font de lui un incontournable héro.
