Passion... 24 Hours of Le Mans
The other day, while Jacky Ickx and I had lunch in a very nice little Italian restaurant, Jacky says to me: "I have just received a splendid book whose foreword, very touching, is written by Jean-Claude Andruet. You must absolutely tell this history on our website! ".
Then, he offered me a copy of this book and said : "The history of this boy is really fantastic and it's worth to speak about it. Now that I read this book, I sincerely regret not having seen the passionates on the circuit's sides as they deserved it. You have to try to get in touch with the author of this book and to ask for his collaboration to our website ! ". The Master's words !
Back at home, I though again about Jacky's words but, where was I going to find the coordinates of this Thierry Coulibaly ? Internet ? Making a search showed naturally all the websites making promotion of this book, but nobody revealed the coordinates of this person. By means of patience, I found a guestbook on which someone named Thierry Coulibaly left an e-mail address.
I thus took the chance to write at this address, without revealing the subject of my request, by asking whether this person was the one who wrote the book "Passion... 24 Hours of Le Mans" and, if it was correct, to contact me.
The chance was with me because two days later, I received an affirmative answer of Thierry who tells me being, at the same time astonished and delighted that somebody wrote to him from Belgium and asks me: "What can I do for you ? ".
I thus hasten to expose my discussion with Jacky Ickx to him and proposes to him to collaborate with the website dedicated to Jacky by writing an article about the vision he had on Jacky during his participations to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
I must admit that, considering the quality of this book and of the photos which it contains, I thought that Thierry was a professional photographer or journalist and it is with this idea in mind that I asked him for his collaboration.
It is with simplicity that Thierry wrote to me "I am not at all a professional photographer, nor journalist, this book is right the resultant of a passion, and I did it without pretending, but I am happy to have dared to carry it out."
Before saying more about Thierry Coulibaly, let me summarize the foreword written by Jean-Claude Andruet :
...
I have today the privilege to write these some lines on the photos of your passion, fidelity with your passion, and at the years which stick to it.
Your request touches me, you the kid I saw behind nettings of the closed park the first time that I ran the 24 Hours of Mans.
Actually, it was your large eyes of avid kid to collect a world of which you dreamed which tenderized me, because you were a prisoner of this blasted netting barrier, which you accepted without saying anything, with respect, as your parents had taught it so well to you.
I cannot transcribe it, but all that I felt it, and I came to take you for making you live the race with us in the stand. You allured all the team and each year it was our meeting... the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This friendship by which obstinacy astonishes... I thank you for having granted it to me, it is invaluable for me... and I am happy, and proud, to see you making a success of a book so different about the 24 Hours from Le Mans, a testimony out of reach... of so many passioned... whom, I hope , like me, will appreciate it. You probably have already understood everything !
From the first pages of this book, one is in the bath... Not only the past returns to the memory, but everyone is recognized himself in the skin of this kid with a lot of passion and light in the eyes. What we dreamed, he lived it, and only this worth to look at this book. Very little text, just enough, but full of photos... and what a photos !
Jacky Ickx himself, very touched by this history, wrote an other foreword :It is necessary that the projectors died out to understand the selfishness and the individualism which characterize the racing drivers in general. Without the affection and the passion of the witnesses who revolve around this sport, this one would not exist, the drivers either!
The foreword of Jean-Claude Andruet evokes the most touching history and the most beautiful homage which one can return to Thierry Coulibaly and to all those whom, like him, love motorsports.
It is certain, dear Thierry, that I will carry from now on a different glance on all those who are on the other of the barrier and who support us day after day in the conquest of success.
To you and to them all, thank you, thank you, thank you. What a beautiful homage of these two champions to this passionate in who each one of us can recognize himself! The pilots of the present generation should learn the lesson from them.
But who is thus this Thierry Coulibaly ?
It is the question I asked myself as soon as I had his book between hands. Put aside the story that he lived with Jean-Claude Andruet, he does not speak about him in his book. No photo either. It is really the discretion of anonymous passionate.
For this reason, in my first mail, I asked him to say some more about him. With much of kindness here is what he answered me : "I was born in 1954, my father was African and my mother was Britton (my father came to make the war in France and married his war godmother. There is, of the remainder, a documentary film which speaks about my father and in which I symbolize his escape and answer the questions of the movie maker).
I, very young, had the passion of the motorsports and Jean-Claude Andruet made me came inside the pits. For this day of June 1967, we have remained very friendly.
It is rather astonishing to note that the majority of the people would have liked to have a photo of me in the book, whereas I did not want to do it. I would not have imagined that.
The foreword of Jean-Claude is really very touching and written extremely well, he is gifted for a multitude of things this guy."
Of course, these remarks are published with the authorization of Thierry Coulibaly who adds : "It is an honor for my parents who, alas, are not here any more but to whom I am very grateful to have inculcated to me the respect of others, and the sour values of our world."
One can not better do and, thanks to Jacky Ickx once more, I have the chance and the honor to have a friendly contact with a great person, Thierry Coulibaly, who published a very great book, Passion... the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

J'ai trouvé ce livre en expo dans une librairie de Lisieux lors de mes vacances de la Toussaint. Dans la vitrine, le livre me disait "viens viens, achêtes-moi !!!" Je vous avoue qu'il n'a pas eu besoin de crier fort. J'ai sorti mon regard de séducteur envers ma femme. Elle a tout de suite compris. Je suis rentré et resorti avec le précieux objet dans un sac plastic. Pas question de le dévoiler comme ça. J'ai attendu d'être revenu au gite où nous avons passé une semaine superbe sur HONFLEUR (je vous le conseille: pour 6 à 10 personnes c'est TOP même au mois de novembre!!!). Alors j'ai savouré le nectar. Oh, on trouve quelques coquilles (Toyota n'a jamais gagné en 1999) mais l'objet est au dessus de celà. C'est L'EMOTION qui se dégage du livre (les photos et les textes sont très forts) qui en fait la force.
Depuis le recueil trône dans la bibliothèque avec les annuels du Mans et quelques bijous toujours en rapport avec la grande course sarthoise.
Je participe donc à votre démarche qui vise à féliciter l'auteurde ce merveilleux ouvrage. BRAVO Mr COULIBALY |

J'ai acheté ce livre magnifique. La préface de Jean-Claude Andruet et l'article "rencontre décisive" de Thierry Coulibaly sont incontestablement les moments forts de cet ouvrage. Ceux qui connaissent Jean Claude Andruet vont reconnaitre immédiatement l'homme. Toujours plein d'humanité. Un trés grand monsieur du sport automobile, et Thierry Coulibaly un authentique passionné dont la modestie mérite la plus grande admiration. Cette rencontre est des plus touchante dans ce monde d'individualistes. Maintenant il convient d'encourager Mr Coulibaly pour nous faire vivre la carrière de Jean-Claude Andruet. |

J'ai eu l'occasion de vivre les mêmes situations que Mr Coulibaly, les déplacements sur les circuits ,au Mans...les courses d'endurance en Italie,en Angleterre, en Allemagne, à Spa Francorchamps... heureusement !!! il y avait les amis du "Club Jacky Ickx" et puis Monsieur Jacky nous accueillait à bras ouvert... que de souvenirs et de bons moments. Pour les jeunes, il serait mieux d'être sur un circuit et vivre une passion que de trainer en rue.

Vous avez tout à fait raison dans votre remarque sur le prix des entrées cher "WEB",la passion du sport automobile devrait être abordable à toutes les tranches sociales. Qui peut payer 250 € pour allez voir un GP. Un GP c'est le "Business" 90% des spectateurs sont les invités des sponsors, ce ne sont pas des passionnés. Une vraie passion c'est un "flash" pour une belle voiture, pour une marque, pour un pilote....

Monsieur COPIN je vous remercie pour votre si aimable commentaire. Pour ce qui est de votre proposition d'écrire un livre avec Jean-Claude ANDRUET, nous en avons parlé et cela est envisagé. Travailler ensemble est un réel plaisir, Jean-Claude est quelqu'un d'entier mais avec lequel je me suis toujours très bien entendu, il est très exigeant mais extrèmement intelligent et avec les gens intelligents il y a toujours un dialogue possible.

Comment être surpris par l'attitude de ces Messieurs Ickx et Andruet ? Ils ont un cœur (gros comme ça quand ils sont dans une auto de course, et encore plus gros quand ils en sortent). Je suis heureux de les avoir comme "idoles" encore aujourd'hui. Je suis fier de ne pas m'être trompé en aimant ces gens-là.
Leur gentillesse n'a d'égale que leur grandeur.

Vous avez raison Claude, ces grands messieurs du sport auto sont avant tout des hommes avec des sentiments, des angoisses, des joies mais aussi des peines. Moi qui n'étais qu'un quidam passionné, j'ai eu le privilège de les connaître et de venir leur ami. Chaque rencontre même si elle est régulière n'est jamais banale, elle est chaque fois enrichissante, étonnate, parfois poignante et surtout ils me traitent d'égal à égal, moi qui ne suis qu'un passionné qui a eu la chance de devenir un ami et qui en cas de besoin peux compter sur eux. Ce sont tout simplement des hommmes, mais des hommes qui connaissent la valeur de la vie pour l'avoir trop de fois vu s'envoler, et qui savent détecter avec une grande finesse les vrai valeur de l'amitié.
Je suis heureux Claude que vous aimiez ces personnages de légende, mais ils ne l'ont écrite cette légende que parce qu'il y avait des gens comme vous pour la faire vivre.
