My participation to the races stays an act of will, and it is exactly in it that the thing distinguishes itself from the passion. I feel no need to race, but I feel even less some desire to not doing it. Jacky Ickx Daily Photo

Ickx : « Very good memories »
Ambassador of the Volkswagen brand, which currently crushes the competition on the Dakar in the car category, Jacky Ickx visited the plateau of the mythical rally-raid. Winner of the race in 1983 with Claude Brasseur, the former Belgian driver expressed his enjoyment to be back at the bivouac of the Dakar. "I’m always keen to come back to the Dakar. I’ve got plenty of fond memories of it", comments Ickx.
If Jacky Ickx won the Dakar in 1983, on the African lands, six-times winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans appreciates the new geographical location of the rally-raid. "In 1984, already Thierry Sabine had thought about organising a Dakar in South America. Few people can remember, but the idea was already there. This edition is loyal to the tradition and in keeping with the history of the Dakar."
If he is present in South America as ambassador of Volkswagen, the former driver asserts feeling good in his observer's role of the car racing. "Let’s keep our feet on the ground – you can’t even imagine being competitive on the Dakar at the age of 65. I did it 15 times, so I’ve had all the luck in the world. The future belongs to young competitors full of ambition and dreams who want to make it right to the end."
Commenting on the race of the Volkswagen drivers, who occupy the first three places overall, Jacky Ickx recognizes the difficulty of the situation for the VW team manager, Kris Nissen. "How do you protect the team’s and constructor’s interests as well as managing the wishes of the drivers, who are all individualists and who all want to win ". It is nevertheless the equation which Volkswagen will have to answer to pursue the rally-raid in the best positions.
