My participation to the races stays an act of will, and it is exactly in it that the thing distinguishes itself from the passion. I feel no need to race, but I feel even less some desire to not doing it.

Tribute from Philippe Volkaerts

Sharing these pictures brings me back to the early days of my photographer's career. With a degree in hand, and my national service behind me..., I tried to offer my services to the various racing magazines and newspapers available at the end of the seventies.

Nice job but "first come first served" and there where plenty of photographers accredited already... In 1979 and with a couple of friends I went to North America to follow the F1 Grand Prix's and the end of the Citicorp Canam Challenge.

Very few European photographers were covering these events and it helped in gaining a job with Belgium's Sport Moteur.

I can imagine that for Jacky the Canam was a refreshing experience after a stint with an old Ligier which wasn't really at Jacky's level. But this is another story and I will come back with some pictures of the Canadian and American Grand Prix 1979.

to be continued...
